Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG to Debut at Detroit Auto Show


With the debut of the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG at the Detroit Motor Show on 13 January 2014, we’ll be looking at the impressive new Mercedes-Benz contender in the growing compact SUV segment. The car is equipped with the world’s most powerful, production four-cylinder, 2.0L turbo engine, capable of producing 360 hp and 450 Newton metres of torque.

The new, attractively designed, and powerful GLA 45 AMG SUV deserves kudos in the are of emissions and fuel consumption too. With fuel consumption at just 37.6 mpg, and compliance with EU 6 emissions standards: CO2 emissions 175 g/km, it’s clear that GLA 45 AMG performance doesn’t come at the expense of the environment.

In case power combined with better fuel efficiency and low emissions wasn’t enough, the GLA 45 AMG raises the bar even higher by providing stellar driving dynamics. The GLA 45 AMG accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. The GLA 45 AMG impresses even further with its performance oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, and AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, which creates a sporty, yet efficient drive system concept.

The GLA 45 AMG is the third vehicle with the four-cylinder turbo engine, the other two being the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. TheĀ  GLA 45 AMG though is the first designed to appeal specifically to a young target group. This trend-oriented customer group’s preferences are in styling, dynamics and independence. All traits that feature prominently in this new, high-performance compact SUV.

Meeting the desires of a wide variety of customers has always been one of Mercedes-AMG’s greatest strengths. With the launch of the GLA 45 AMG, the SUV line-up now totals 5 models, the GLA 45 AMG, ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG. This means Mercedes-AMG currently offers the widest range of SUV models of all high-performance, premium brands.

Besides a more powerful, more fuel efficient and lower emission car, the GLA 45 AMG comes with technology for performance enhancement, improved handling, better driver assistance, and safety. The GLA 45 AMG comes with 3 transmission modes: “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF”, allowing the driver to vary dynamic performance at the push of a button. ESP Curve Dynamic Assist is also included as standard. There’s also the AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system, and a new four-link rear axle has also been newly developed. The list of state-of-the-art enhancements packed into the GLA 45 AMG goes on and on.

Power, handling, and being eco friendly would still leave a vehicle lacking unless it’s all packed into a car with an incredibly attractive design. The GLA 45 AMG delivers. The design of the GLA 45 AMG looks as sleek and trendy as it is, with the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille painted matte titanium grey, distinct AMG lettering, large cooling air intakes, Bi-xenon headlights, and the eye catching AMG light-alloy wheels that come in three designs. The matte titanium grey inserts in the side sill panels, the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings and the aluminium roof rails also make the GLA 45 AMG stand out from the crowd. The rear end too makes theĀ  GLA 45 AMG a head turner, with its matte titanium grey diffuser insert and rectangular, chrome-plated, twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

The interior of the GLA 45 AMG wasn’t overlooked. The sports seats are Artico man-made leather/Dinamica microfibre, with contrasting red topstitching and red designo seatbelts. There’s a three-spoke, nappa leather multifunction sports steering wheel with red contrasting topstitching, and perforated leather grip. The AMG instrument cluster is a two-tube design with central colour display, AMG main menu, and RACETIMER to provide information to the driver. The instrument panel is finished in brushed aluminium, which complements the brushed stainless-steel of the AMG front door sills nicely.

There are a multitude of optional choices in equipment and trim, as one would expect from the compact SUV that Mercedes-Benz intends to have cleave off a significant market share in the high power, compact SUV segment.
